What should cities do to tackle youth unemployment in their COVID recovery plans?

About this event

Despite vacancies bouncing back as restrictions have eased, long-term youth unemployment rose by over a half during the crisis to 256,000 in England, reaching its highest level in five years. Young people with multiple disadvantages and lower qualifications are much more likely to become long-term unemployed and one in eight of all young people are not in full-time education or employment. COVID-19 has exacerbated disadvantages experienced by young people furthest from the labour market and COVID recovery plans provide an opportunity to address this. The ability of all young people to access training, support, employment, and entrepreneurial opportunities in their local area is key to transforming regional economies.

Youth Futures Foundation and IPPO are hosting an event on Tuesday 16th November, 3.30pm-5pm to bring together local policymakers, practitioners and researchers to explore what should be in cities local recovery plans to boost youth employment, particularly among marginalised groups.

We will present the latest data and evidence from the UK and globally, and have breakout sessions to dig deeper into the following areas:

  • Working in partnership to level up for young people – the potential of collocated youth employment services
  • Future-proofing jobs and skills post-pandemic
  • The role of job centres and work coaches in supporting young people on their journey to employment
  • Opportunities and challenges for employers in recruiting and retaining local young people
