Undertake research involving children or vulnerable individuals

If you plan to do research involving children or vulnerable individuals, you must follow data protection laws. There are extra steps and securities you’ll need to follow in these cases. Read through the related guidance to find out how you can abide by GDPR.

Before you start

  • Make sure you have completed the UCL general data protection (GDPR) training.
  • This guidance only applies if your research project involves processing personal data. Personal data is any information relating to an identified or an identifiable person.
  • A ‘vulnerable individual' is anyone who may find it difficult to understand how we use their information.
  • If you plan to do research involving children under 13 years, you’ll also need to read writing privacy notices for children under 13 years.
