Planning for Research Impact
Course Description:

Term 2: 16/03/2022 13:00-16:00

Term 3: 22/06/2022 13:00-16:00

An interactive workshop which will help academics to create an impact and evidence plan for their own research projects. Providing tools, resources and support for planning impact activities, participants will leave the session with an understanding of methodologies for creating impact in the ‘real world’.

Following on from ‘Introduction to Impact at UCL’, this participatory workshop will allow academics to use examples from their own proposed research to create an impact plan. They will be provided with tools to identify potential partners, discuss the best routes to engagement for different communities, plan for resourcing their activities and learn how to measure and evidence their impacts in a small group setting.

This session will cover:

  • Theory of ‘Impact’ and the definitions and opportunities it includes
  • Planning for impact around your research cycle
  • Stakeholder mapping and an introduction to different engagement methods
  • Activities, responsibilities and timelines
  • Measuring evidence for impact

The UCL Research Impact Team is part of the Vice Provost Research, Innovation and Global Engagement office. In addition to supporting the development of over 200 impact projects and case studies for REF 2021, the team support individual academics with impact planning and activities, provide faculties with data and advice for collating impact information and work alongside strategic initiatives, projects and programmes to measure UCL’s institutional impact on societies biggest challenges.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand where you can add value with impact no matter where you are in your research
  • Understand how your research can benefit external partners and how to work together in solving problems
  • Begin to plan, resource and gain support for impact activities relating the impact you wish to achieve at UCL
  • Measure and gather evidence of your impact from activities and plan for long term impacts
