DSD: Getting Started with Stata - Part 1 (Orientation and materials)
Course Description:

This blended learning course is designed to help you to use Stata to import, manipulate, describe and analyse categorical and continuous data, and to produce plots and tables to support analysis.

There will be four online tutorials designed to be taken in sequence, one an introduction to the course and three specialist tutorials. This course is Part 1 of the series. This course involves
  • around four hours of online, video based learning
  • directed reading on selected web sites
  • a number of exercise sheets linked to the video material
  • an online workshop to consolidate your learning

To benefit fully from the course you should complete all of these elements.

Once you have booked on the course you will be able to access all of the online materials in our Digital Skills Development Moodle course. These include a short introduction video that explain how the course is delivered.

PREREQUISITES: You should have a good understanding of statistical concepts. No prior experience with Stata is required, but experience using a spreadsheet application such as Excel would be an advantage.

IMPORTANT: Please ensure you complete any necessary pre-learning (found in our Moodle course) before starting the live element of the training.

Once you have enrolled, you will need to click on the play button under 'My current enrolments' in My Learning to join at the time of the live session. You will also receive an email containing the direct joining link at least a day before the session.

We would encourage those who are new to Microsoft Teams to join within the first 15 minutes of the advertised start time in order to test out their connection/audio. The actual session will start on the hour.
At the end of this four part course you will be able to:
  • Create simple charts of categorical and continuous data
  • Import data from Excel and from plain text files
  • Create Stata scripts (do files)
  • Calculate frequencies and descriptive statistics
  • Calculate correlation coefficients
  • Transform and recode variables
  • Create cross tabulations
  • Build linear regression models
