The proton-motive force is the dynamic electrical force-field that powers all life on earth. In the early years of the 20th century, one lab in Cambridge laid the foundations for our understanding of the dynamic side of biochemistry. The free spirits that dispersed from that lab seeded some of the most important intellectual traditions within UCL and further afield. Nick will highlight how the positive effects of an open-minded inclusiveness transmitted right through into the 21st century. He will interweave this human story with some of the excitingly unanswered scientific implications, stretching from the origin of life to consciousness.
