Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works

As part of UCL’s Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works, a permanent video wall installation is proposed for the North Cloisters later this year. Inspired by similar screens in museums and art galleries, it will be a creative way to showcase some of the research taking place in UCL. It will not be used for advertising or marketing.
The location of the video wall will not impact the daily operations of the Housman Room and there will be no noise disturbance. The width of the entrance will allow for wheelchairs to turn, as well as the moving of furniture and catering trolleys in and out of the room. The video wall will be switched off during quiet periods like evenings and College closures.
The Legacy Works team are investigating options to automate the entrance doors and are willing to fund the work. Technology has moved on since a previous attempt to automate the doors in 2016 failed.

Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works Website

From Monday 5 May to the end of July 2025, contractors will conduct paving removal and reinstalment works in the Quad. Access to the Quad and nearby buildings will be maintained; however, routes will need to be slightly altered to avoid the works. Further information can be found on the Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works website and queries can be sent via email to estates.legacy.works@ucl.ac.uk.

Social events in Term 2

Wine Tasting

On March 6th, approximately 100 members gathered for an engaging wine tasting event. Lucie, (ASCR member), expertly introduced the wines and led an entertaining quiz. Collette, the bar manager, will aim to stock the two most popular wines at the bar. There was a wine-themed quiz which was a spirited and fiercely contested affair. A well-earned prize was presented to the victorious team.

Housman Talks

There was one Housman Talk in Term 2, presented by Professor Quentin Pankhurst, Medical Physics & Biomedical Engineering, in collaboration with UCL Business. He spoke about his work with nanomagnets and how they are used to diagnose and treat breast cancer.
The attendees were from many different departments and, as with all the Housman Talks, members and their guests were really interested to hear what their colleagues at UCL are doing.
