SEEP0021 Polish C Off Track Language

Prerequisites:

Either successful completion of SEEP2109 Polish B off-track language module or equivalent (upper intermediate) knowledge of Polish. An assessment test will be arranged with the tutor to assess students' level before they join the course.

Summative Assessment

2 hour written examination (70%), including grammar and lexical exercises (20%), reading (25%), and writing (25%); oral examination (30%), consisting of presentation (15%) and social conversation (15%).

Formative Coursework

Progress is carefully monitored, in particular in the early stages of the course, through a number of formative assessment tasks (short presentations and conversation exercises in class, informal and semi-formal vocabulary tests, reading comprehension tasks, grammar practice, Q&A sessions) and homework exercises.

Module Outline

This course aims to enable students to function in most everyday situations in Polish and to appreciate the complexity of Polish culture and society. This includes sound knowledge of vocabulary (approximately 2200-2500 words), grammar, morphology (e.g. verbs in the present and past tense and various moods, verbal aspect, where relevant, noun cases, singular and plural forms, possessive constructions, derivation, etc.), syntax (word order in complex sentences), and phonetics (improving pronunciation and intonation). The course follows up and consolidates knowledge of Polish gained on the Polish B off-track module, and completes the Polish off-track (A, B, and C) course.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

By the end of the course students should have reached level B2 (an advanced level) in all four skills according to the grading provided by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Depending on the independent study time they spent on completing their course options, students may consider taking the ECL language examination at Level B2 in languages where such examination is available.

Students will have improved their intercultural communication skills, independent study skills, and general language learning ability.
