Meet the HuRiEE Team
Dr Agnieszka Kubal (PI) is Associate Professor at SSEES, UCL. She is a socio-legal scholar specialising in migration and human rights.
Beáta Huszka is Research Fellow at UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies working in the HuRiEE project focusing on Romania and Hungary. She has worked as an assistant professor at ELTE faculty of social sciences in Budapest since completing her PhD at the Central European University in 2010. She was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at ELIAMEP, Athens, Greece (2019-2021) and a visiting researcher at ECFR focusing on policy issues in Southeast Europe (2020-2022). She has extensive research experience on minority issues in Central Eastern Europe and the Balkans, including academic and policy research. She was a visiting researcher at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars (2007), the European University Institute (2006), the Center for European Policy Studies (2007), was a research fellow at the New Europe College in Bucharest (2014-2015) and held an International Policy Fellowship at the Open Society Institute (2006-2007). From 2013 to 2017, she led a work package of the EU’s FP7 project FRAME at ELTE, coordinated by Leuven Centre for Global Governance Studies, researching the role of human rights in the EU’s external relations. She is the author of the book Secessionist Movements and Ethnic Conflict (Routledge, 2014), and her articles appeared in journals such as the Journal of Common Market Studies, Nationalism and Ethnic Politics, Nations and Nationalism and the Southeast European and Black Sea Studies.
Hanna Oliinyk is Research Assistant for the HuRiEE project. She is a political scientist interested in memory politics, democratic transition in post-communist countries and the human rights movement in the Ukrainian SSR. She has an MA in Russian and Post-Soviet Politics (University College London, School of Slavonic and East European Studies, 2022) and an MA in Political Science (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, 2016). Her most recent MA dissertation was about the memory politics of the Russian proxy republics in Eastern Ukraine (2014–2021). Hanna’s professional experience includes work for NGOs, research institutions and media.
Denis Shedov is a Research Assistant for the HuRiEE project. He is a human rights activist and a law and society scholar. His area of study is the OSCE region with a special focus on Russia. Denis is a PhD Candidate at the University of Helsinki, writing a thesis on the legal knowledge production in mosques in Central Russia. He has been a visiting research fellow at the Institute for East European Studies of the Free University of Berlin and at the Law and Anthropology Department of the Max Planck Institute, Halle (Saale), Germany. Denis is a board member at the HRDC Memorial and an analyst at OVD-Info. He is also a member of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODHIR) panel of experts on freedom of peaceful assembly and association.
Serian Carlyle is the Project Administrator for the HuRiEE project. She has been working in grant and project management in the charity sector for several years. Most recently, she worked as the Senior Governance and Diversity Adviser for RESULTS UK. She is also conducting a PhD in Soviet cinema at SSEES, funded by a Wolfson Postgraduate Scholarship.
