SSEES Career Guidance
Careers guidance and applications advice is available for SSEES students every weekday during term time. Login into your account to book appointments, secure your place at events and book onto workshops. To apply for work opportunities visit our SSEES Careers Moodle page or visit Job Online which is updated daily. Along with one-to-one appointments, many events and employer led workshops are hosted at Student Central (4th Floor) which is a five minute walk from SSEES.
UCL Careers also provides resources, events and one to one support for SSEES students through each step of the employment process. By introducing you to potential employers and career ideas, SSEES students can go on to build careers in many different sectors, both in the UK and around the world. While you work towards your degree, the extensive services available via UCL Careers can help you to plan, develop your skills and finally, to stand out from the competition when taking on your next challenge, whatever that might be. There are also specialist services available for international students, master’s students, researchers and recent graduates.
Each year SSEES organises two main events at the School: SSEES Alumni Careers Evening, which is an opportunity for SSEES students to listen to past SSEES Alumni and discuss possible career options and SSEES Careers Employers Evening, where students can meet potential employers and speak to them one-to-one. We regularly inform students about the latest internship and career opportunities by email and on SSEES Careers Moodle page.
Meet the Team
SSEES Careers Liaison Tutor: Dr Pete Duncan
Welcome to SSEES! Some undergraduates and many postgraduates who come to SSEES already know exactly what they want to do when they leave. Others have no firm plans. In fact, many of those who come here change their minds as they find out new opportunities that they had hardly heard of, or didn’t think that they could do. The UCL Careers Service plays a vital role for many students in helping you find out what’s available and how to get to the right job or course at the end of your study here.
My job is not to give careers advice but to make sure that SSEES students know what the UCL Careers Service offers you. Every year I organise an evening when SSEES alumni come back and talk to current students about their careers. This is separate from the SSEES Employers’ Evening which Hilary Moor organises and is a recruitment event. The alumni come to tell you about how they got where they are now, what actions they took which helped them and what mistakes they made. The first part of the evening consists of their short talks; after that, you can meet them and develop connections over a social drink.
Careers Consultant for SSEES: Ms Hilary Moor
I’m the Senior Careers Consultant here at SSEES. I run a series of specialised career talks and events throughout the academic year, focussed on the particular career aspirations of students at SSEES, with the goal of helping you to explore all your career opportunities, market yourself effectively in the UK and the SSEES region and meet alumni and employers who can help you understand what you can do and how to get there.
These events are run in the department, but UCL Careers (located on the 4th floor of the ULU building) also offers a huge range of activities to help you find the right path to ensure future career success, whatever you want to do in the future. Come and see our dedicated team of experienced career professionals for one-to-one career coaching, application/CV checks, practice interviews and help with finding internships and jobs – and check out the huge range of careers events we run every year from industry specific careers fairs to skills training and employer networking events.
