A journey through the East European Communities of London
" "Language is a unique characteristic of humans; it marks us out among other species, it is our brand. There are various forms of communication between other species but only humans use an intricate network of sounds and sense to convey meaning. Only humans can lie – because of language!"
Welcome to a tour of East European London online! Join students and teachers of East European languages and culture at the UCL School of Slavonic and East European Studies as they explore the traces that London's East European communities have left on the urban and intellectual landscape of the city.
Our virtual tours include East Europeans' contribution to community life in the British capital from works of art scattered around London's museums and architecture, through cinema, literature, and music, to contemporary design shops and irresistible food stalls. Sample the sounds of languages from the region, as they are spoken in various parts of London in 2015! Our visitors are invited to immerse themselves in East European London and discover the powerful source that London's East Europeans are as partners in learning and in communication across cultures.
