We are delighted to welcome you to UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES). Below you will find key information about important things you need to do and know and details about induction activities that will be taking place across UCL.

To begin with, there are some helpful resources which we would like to direct your attention to such as the Programme Handbooks, module listings and other useful resources which are also available on our current student pages. Our SSEES Student Handbook will be a very important source of information regarding your time and studies at SSEES, this will be availble via the Student Information Hub that will be accessible on Moodle here.

If you feel that you would benefit from having reasonable adjustments made to your assessments, we encourage you to consider looking into this as soon as possible so that arrangements can be confirmed in good time before any assessments that may take place during term 1. The page can be found here

Starting University is a significant life step and there can be too many things to remember sometimes. So we have put together the steps you can follow to ensure that you learn about everything you need to know and do as a new student joining UCL. You can access this here

International Students

Most of the information above applies to our International Students also however we know that there are also a number of unique aspects of the international student experience including vital information about study visas to navigating the new cultural environment in the United Kingdom. To help our international student community settle into UCL we suggest reading about all the important information and support available to you here and about pre-arrival orientation here.

Enrolment

The enrolment process confirms your arrival and registration at the university. It also allows you to collect your campus ID card which will allow you to identify yourself on campus grounds and access areas such as libraries. To ensure you enrol successfully you will need to make sure that you have followed the neccessary steps depending on your student status as a Home or International student. Once you are on campus please see this page which helpfully outlines what you need to do. 

SSEES Induction Week Programme 

Induction Week starts on Monday 23rd September and contains a number of important scheduled sessions with members of staff and students on your programme and beyond. It is important that you are familiar with what is going on in the week and what you need to attend - depending on the programme of study you are registered on. 

The below timetable shows the sessions being run for SSEES Students however UCL will be running sessions and activities across campus during induction week which include campus tours, wellbeing information and much much more. 

Important notes on the Induction Week Timetable

It is important to note the following with regards to the induction week timetable:

  • It may be subject to late-minute changes and so we advise you to please bookmark and re-visit this page often prior to and during the induction week 
  • You can locate the building and address for in person sessions by clicking on the address in the location column
  • Some sessions may be held via Microsoft Teams - any specific joining instructions are indicated below.        
  • If you have not yet done so please ensure you have installed Microsoft Teams onto your computer or device in good time prior to induction week. If you have any queries please see the UCL Guidance Microsoft Teams Help. Alternatively contact ISD for assistance here

How to find your room

UCL has a large campus with many buildings and rooms. To find the room listed in the below timetable more easily, you are advised to use the UCL Map (click here) and you can then type in the name of your building and it will show you the location which you can then access via Google Maps.

How we contact you and how to contact us

The preferred and most effective form of communication with the office is via email. The contact email for all enquiries relating to your programme, module choices, etc. depends on the programme you are registered on. 

SSEES will use primarily use email to contact you about various matters. When you register with ISD you will be allocated a UCL email address - this is the address which will be used to contact you. It is very important that you check your UCL email regularly during term time.

Once your email has been set up, please ensure that you have set up a standard signature that shows your name, student number, year of study and programme. This will speed responses to your queries up when you email the Programme Administrator or other departments at UCL.

When e-mailing please always include the following information in all emails to enable a prompt response:

Beside e-mail students can drop by and speak to one of the team at the Education and Student Support Office (ESSO). The office is located in Room 341 in the SSEES building (see here) on front desk is open during the following times in term-time:

10:00am until 16:00pm from Monday to Friday except Wednesday 10:30-16:00pm (Staff work flexibly, so you may find they are not in the ESSO building on some days of the week; please contact your programme administrator via email on any working day to get in touch with them) 

Please note: the office will be closed for lunch 12:00 - 13:00

Location

Located in the heart of the UCL Bloomsbury Campus, SSEES is situated at 16 Taviton Street close to London Euston Station, Euston Square and Warren Street Underground Stations. It is well served by TfL transport services. If you want to plan your route please see the TfL Journey Planner.
