Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?

I chose to study at UCL SSEES as it has been my dream to immerse myself in the study of the region where my roots lie. Being ethnically Armenian and born in Ukraine, my family moved around Eastern Europe throughout my life. Growing up, I became deeply interested in politics, economics, and the complex dynamics of this region. SSEES offers the perfect platform to explore these areas in depth, combining my passion with academic excellence.

What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?

I am studying History, Politics, and Economics (HPE) BA because I was drawn to the interconnectedness of these fields, as well as the opportunity to explore and challenge myself in different spheres. This interdisciplinary approach allows me to gain a broad understanding while keeping my options open to specialise as a professional in one of these fields later on.

How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?

I am really enjoying my course; I have been both intellectually stimulated and introduced to new concepts and ideas. My favourite module so far is Frontiers of History as it presents a fresh approach to studying history, which has been truly eye-opening for me.

How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?

The academic staff at SSEES are incredibly passionate and genuinely invested in their work. Even though I have only been at university for a short time, I have already reached out for support from my tutorial teachers, and everyone has been extremely helpful and eager to assist. Their enthusiasm for teaching and their willingness to help students is truly remarkable.

What about the social life?

The social life at UCL and SSEES is incredible. UCL offers a huge variety of clubs and societies, catering to all sorts of interests, while SSEES regularly hosts engaging talks and events. It is a vibrant and dynamic university, where there is always something exciting to get involved in, both academically and socially.

What are your future plans/aspirations?

As I am studying History, Politics, and Economics (HPE), an interdisciplinary course, I am currently exploring where my true passion lies. While I am still discovering which path excites me the most, I hope to specialise in either economics or perhaps develop an interest in law in the future.

Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?

My advice would be not to stress and really focus on enjoying the course. You will have the unique opportunity to learn from professionals across various fields, not just one. Take time to explore what you enjoy, and make the most of the wide range of niche and unique modules that SSEES offers—they provide a rare chance to dive deep into specialised areas.
