Serbian/Croatian and East European Studies BA Structure

Compulsory and Elective Modules for the Serbian/Croatian and East European Studies BA. All students must take 4 course units (cu) in each year of study.

Year One

Compulsory Courses

30 credits of Language:

Either

SEEY1001 - Serbian/Croatian Language Level OR

SEEY2001/SEEY2002 - Serbian/Croatian Language Level 2a: Comprehension  and Serbian/Croatian Language Level 2b: Production 

30 credits  from:

SEEE1006 - Literature and Memory 

SEEE2013 - War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema 

60 credits from optional courses in SSEES or other UCL departments. 
Options might include: 

SEEE2008 - Vampires, Society and Culture: Transylvania and Beyond (ELCS)

SEEE2011 - Languages in Contact along the Danube: Intercultural Frictions and Flows (ELCS)

SEEE2006 - How Words Work: Sounds and Sense 

SEEE2007 - How Words Work: Meaning and Modularity 

SEEE2009 - Narratives of Exile 

SEEE2010 - Tales of the unexpected: the supernatural and fantastic in literature, 1800-1930

SEEE2012 - Stories of Change, Formal Experiments and New Waves* (ELCS)

SEHI1004 - Frontiers of History 

SESS1205 - Understanding Politics: The Big Questions in Contemporary Europe 

SESS1206 - Understanding Politics II: How Politics Works 

SESS1202 - Understanding Society: Introduction to Social Theory 

SESS1203 - Understanding Society: Introduction to Political Sociology 

SESS1204 - Communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe

Year Two

30 credits compulsory literature/culture modules: 

SEEY2105 - Introduction to Serbian and Croatian Literature 
Writing from the Other Europe

Options 2 (2.0 cu)

2.0 cu from available optional courses in SSEES or other UCL departments

Year Three (Abroad)

Students will be required to study at an overseas institution, taking 4 course units. Further details are contained in the Year Abroad Handbook.
