Formative Assessment
Progress is carefully monitored, in particular in the early stages of the course, through a number of formative assessment tasks (reading and translating, writing and delivering short presentations in class) and homework exercises.
Module Outline
This is a course for students who have little or no prior knowledge of Serbian/Croatian and who wish to attain a level of competence that will allow them to communicate effectively in a number of straightforward situations. Students will also be introduced to the reading of simple texts, including works of literature, in Serbian/Croatian. The course provides knowledge of basic Serbian/Croatian grammar and vocabulary as well as an introduction to the culture of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia and societies where Serbian/Croatian is spoken.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES
By the end of the course students should be able:
- to understand authentic basic spoken and written Serbian/Croatian (including straightforward radio and television materials etc.) presented at a measured pace; to extract required information and record it accurately and coherently in English.
- to express orally and in writing simple facts, opinions and emotions and describe uncomplicated sequences of events in Serbian/Croatian; to participate in conversations relating to everyday life and on straightforward topics using straightforward Serbian/Croatian; to speak about selected aspects of life and culture in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia and in societies where Serbian/Croatian is spoken.
