Prerequisites:

Open to students who have successfully completed Polish Level 1 or who can demonstrate equivalent competence

Compulsory Module for: Polish and East European Studies, Russian and Polish, Russian with Polish, Modern Languages combined degrees of which Polish is a component

Summative Assessment

Polish Language Level 2A: 45 minute aural examination (20%); 3 hour written examination (80%).

Polish Language Level 2B: 20 minute oral examination (20%); 3 hour written examination (80%).

Formative Coursework

Progress is carefully monitored, in particular in the early stages of the course, through a number of formative assessment tasks (reading and translating, writing and delivering short presentations in class) and homework exercises.

Module Outline

This is a course for students who have successfully completed Polish Language Level 1, or who can demonstrate equivalent competence in Polish. The course consists of two components, comprehension and production, each of which has the value of 0.5 of a course-unit. Both components are taught in conjunction.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

By the end of the course students should be able:

  • to understand a wide range of authentic spoken and written Polish from predictable topic areas; to extract required information and record it accurately and coherently in English
  • to manipulate spoken and written Polish with appropriate and accurate use of lexis and grammatical structures in a variety of contexts and registers; to speak with confidence and accuracy appropriate to this level about many aspects of life and culture in Poland and societies where Polish is spoken
  • to demonstrate understanding of translation by discussing problems of specific translations from and into Polish; to successfully translate a range of texts from and into Polish.
  • to demonstrate knowledge and active use of more complex grammatical structures and a wide range of vocabulary in Polish.
