Research summary

Alex’s main research areas are Linguistics and Education and more specifically Sociolinguistics, Translation and Interpreting. In the last 10 years, he has also been engaged in numerous research project in the field of Higher Education, teaching and learning which generated a few publications in this field. The most recent chapter on developments in the field of Higher Education in Uzbekistan reflects his involvement in HE projects funded by the British Council, TEMPUS and Erasmus+.

Alex published over 100 articles, papers, books and book chapters on issues in Translation/Interpreting, Higher Education in the UK and overseas, Sociolinguistics, Language Policy and Planning. His engagement in various international Higher Education projects funded by the British Council, European Commission and United Nations agencies covered the topics of Quality Assurance and Enhancement, Employability, Student Engagement and Research, Language Training, Translation and Interpreting, Multilingualism.


Dr Alex Krouglov holds his degrees in Translation, Interpreting and Sociolinguistics. He did his post-doctoral training and research at the SSEES in 1998/9. He has worked as a Higher Education expert, translator, interpreter, editor, lecturer, assessor, adviser, supervisor, project coordinator and consultant for numerous universities and international organisations, e.g. UN, UNDP, World Bank, International Criminal Court, British Council, Institute of Linguists and numerous EU agencies.

Alex came to SSEES in 2017 from London Metropolitan University where he was an Associate Professor and Associate Dean of the Faculty with special responsibilities for research and languages. Before he joined London Met, he worked at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office for almost 10 years starting from the position of the Head of Russian and Slavonic Languages and later appointed as an Assistant Director of the Diplomatic Language Training looking after the training of British diplomatic staff, interpreters and translators in the UK and overseas.

Alex currently teaches at the SSEES and conducts research in the field of Higher Education as the Leading Researcher in the field of Higher Education at Rezekne Academy of Technologies, Latvia.
