Congratulations to Dr Alessandro Iandolo who has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship for 12 months.

Congratulations to Dr Alessandro Iandolo, Lecturer in Soviet/Post-Soviet History, who has been awarded a Leverhulme Research Fellowship for 12 months.
Alessandro's project is titled Red masks: Soviet imperialism in the Global South.
Between 1955 and 1991, the Soviet Union established political, economic, and cultural relations with dozens of states in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Yet, the USSR invested millions of rubles in the Global South but gained little in return. Understanding Soviet involvement requires engaging the non-material dimensions of imperialism. This project investigates the Soviet attempt to remake the fabric of society in the Global South. Analyzing the encounter of Soviet teachers, doctors, and engineers with pupils, patients, and workers in Cuba, Guinea, and Indonesia, the project will investigate the transmission of Soviet ideas and norms on a global scale.
Dr Iandolo will undertake fieldwork overseas in the academic year 2025-26.
