SSEES PhD Student Awarded Mary Angela Mary Conning Scholarship

Jitka Králová is a SSEES PhD candidate supervised by Prof. Jan Kubik. Her doctoral project aims to provide novel insights into the socio-economic impacts of predatory lending and situate them within the wider context of postsocialist deindustrialization.

The Angela Mary Conning Scholarship will support Jitka's doctoral ethnographic research on personal indebtedness and the debt industry in deindustrialized regions of the Czech Republic.

The funding will also help her cover essential fieldwork costs such as travel, accommodation and participant compensation, enabling her to conduct in-depth interviews with debtors and participant observations of their everyday encounters with various financial institutions. Ultimately, the scholarship will support the completion of Jitka's doctoral fieldwork and contribute to scholarship on financialization, inequality, and post-socialist transitions in Central and Eastern Europe.
