Dr Ilias Chondrogiannis' Joint Project Awarded by the Financial Conduct Authority

22 February 2025

Congratulations to Dr Ilias Chondrogiannis and Dr Michael Chatzipanagiotis on being awarded £22,600 for their joint project.

Dr Ilias Chondrogiannis

SSEES Academic Dr Ilias Chondrogiannis and Dr Michael Chatzipanagiotis (Department of Law, University of Cyprus) submitted a research proposal for the Economic Research Competition in December 2024 and were awarded a £22,600 grant. The competition was launched by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to fund research projects focused on growth, competitiveness and regulation in the UK financial services sector.

Their project is entitled "Tail risk in the UK FinTech sector: implications for consumer credit and economic growth"

The three key themes of their work are: (i) sources and impact of tail risk for different types of FinTech firms, with emphasis on firms listed in the London Stock Exchange (ii) implications of distress in FinTech for consumers (especially consumer credit) and economic growth (iii) consumer protection legislation and gaps in regulatory implementation.

The project started on 1 January 2025 and will end on 31 March 2025. The findings will be presented in a conference organised for that purpose, attended by the researchers and high-ranking FCA staff.
