Introducing SSEES Society
28 May 2024
The SSEES Society is the student-led organisation of the SSEES Department, dedicated to those interested in Central and Eastern Europe.
All SSEES students automatically become members of the SSEES Society, and we encourage UCL students who are interested in the region to join. Our society fulfills three pillars, which include student representation, community building, and organisation of career-oriented events.
The society serves as a body representing student’s academic and educational interests in the department, working alongside academic representatives. We listen to students' voices and advocate for them to the appropriate bodies, ensuring an exceptional academic experience for our students.
We organise various social events, to create a cohesive student community, and provide enjoyment for our members in addition to their studies. We aim to include as many elements as possible from the SSEES region, allowing students to learn and experience the culture. Our events include Eurovision karaoke, food tasting, movie nights, and game nights. We try to diversify events to ensure that everyone feels included.
The society assists students with their career choices and organises engaging events focused on current affairs by inviting ambassadors, journalists, and academics to present. The purpose of these events is to get a closer look at how different proficiencies operate, and to get first-hand insight about global affairs.
Meet Attila Mesterházy - SSEES Society President
My name is Attila Mesterházy, the president of the SSEES Society. I’m a third-year Politics, Sociology, and East European studies student at SSEES. I began my journey with the SSEES Society as a first-year representative, later becoming Vice-President, and now serving as President. I was born and raised in Hungary and moved to London to study my region under world-class academics at one of the most prestigious universities in the world. I am eager to meet all of you and to continue building upon the reputable legacy of the Society.
