As we are approaching the end of an eventful and exciting year, we are delighted to present the most significant news and events of UCL SSEES during 2024.

1. New Staff Joined UCL SSEES

In September 2024, SSEES was thrilled to welcome six new members of academic and professional staff. Read more.

2. We Obtained Our First Athena Swan Bronze Award

Athena Swan

The Award recognises and demonstrates our continued work to advancing gender equality in SSEES, and comes from the work of our Athena Swan Committee, comprised of staff and students, who have undertaken analytical work throughout the submission process to allow us to work towards cultural improvements over the coming years. 3. SSEES Hosted The International Booker Prize Winning Author Georgi Gospodinov and his Translator Angela Rodel to Discuss Their Multi-Award-Winning Novel

The International Booker Prize winning author Georgi Gospodinov and his translator Angela Rodel joined UCL SSEES’s Uilleam Blacker, who was a member of the judging panel for the Prize, for a conversation about Georgi’s latest, multi-award-winning novel, Time Shelter, a brilliant, satirical look at memory, nostalgia and populist politics. 4. SSEES Launched Two New Research Centres
 

SSEES launched two new research centres, PLEJ and PIMs.

The Platform for Linguistic and Epistemic Justice (PLEJ) aims to place socio-cultural linguistic research front and centre among the interdisciplinary areas of enquiry with social impact at SSEES, UCL, and beyond. Read more.

Places, Identities, Memories poster
The interdisciplinary research centre Places, Identities and Memories (PIMs) will study how “space” becomes a “place” and what it means for people’s lives and their futures. Read more.

8. SSEES Student Won Prestigious Young Researchers Award from Central Bank of Macedonia

Nikita Ristovski
Nikita Ristovski, a History, Politics and Economics BA student at UCL's School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES), has been awarded the Annual Prize for Young Researchers by the Central Bank of Macedonia. Read more.

 

9. We held our 2024 Graduation Ceremony

On Tuesday 2nd September 2024, our recently graduated BA cohort gathered together in the Royal Festival Hall to celebrate their achievements at the Royal Festival Hall, surrounded by friends, family and SSEES academics and professional services. 10. SSEES Won Bronze Award for Green Impact Scheme

Our school has earned the Bronze Award in the Green Impact scheme. This award signifies their commitment to environmental sustainability and supports UCL’s broader green initiatives. Read more.
