SSEES Student awarded ENS Scholarship

Congratulations to Melvyn Ingleby who has been awarded a scholarship for a two/three-year course at the École Normale Supérieure (ENS) in Paris.

Considered to be one of the most competitive Master programmes for international students in France, only thirty scholarships are awarded annually following a rigorous selection process consisting of three 4-hour exams, both in French and English, and two interviews in French. For his topic, Melvyn was asked to respond to the question, ‘L'histoire remplit-elle une fonction morale et civique?’

Famous as the birthplace of French theorists such as Foucault, Derrida, Bourdieu and Althusser, the ENS prides itself on being the spiritual home of most of France’s well-known academics and ministers. It is generally seen as the best of France’s ‘grandes écoles’, at least where ‘pure academia’ is concerned. Courses at ENS allow students to pick and combine subjects rather than setting predefined programmes. Students are accommodated on campus in the French capital’s Quartier Latin. The scholarship is worth 1,000 euros per month.

Melvyn graduates this year with a First Class degree in BA History and is one of four SSEES students to receive a commendation for the Dean’s List.
