Senior Lecturer in the Cultural History of Central Europe

Profile

I am an intellectual and cultural historian, focusing on German, Central European, French and transatlantic history. My first book, Unbegrenzte Möglichkeiten. 'Amerikanisierung' in Deutschland und Frankreich, 1900–1933 (Stuttgart: Steiner, 2003) compared the infatuation with 'Americanization' and 'Americanism' in France and Germany, where all things American were perceived as peculiarly modern.

Dr Sarah Young

Senior Lecturer in Russian

Profile

My research has developed in two main strands, but with overlapping themes. I initially focused on the novels of Dostoevsky, researching the intersection of narrative and ethics. My first book, Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot' and the Ethical Foundations of Narrative (Anthem, 2004) examined the relationship of the author, narrator and characters, and the role of character in shaping the text. I have also researched the significance of spiritual belief to this novel, from connections with biblical theology to the appearance of Buddhist motifs.

Dr Miriam Manchin

Senior Lecturer in Political Economy of European Union Integration

Profile

My research activities cover issues related to international trade, foreign direct investment, mergers and acquisitions, and migration. My current and past work in these fields looked at the role of trade costs, infrastructure, and institutions in economic integration; the issue of home bias and non-tariff barriers, the importance of trade preferences, multilateral trade liberalization; rules of origin, and regional economic integration in Europe, network effects.
