Passionate Politics

1 January 2017

From 14 November 2014

A new research group called ‘Passionate Politics’ has been set up by Tim Beasley-Murray (UCL SSEES), Prof Axel Körner (UCL History), Dr Uta Staiger (UCL European Institute), Dr Dina Gusejnova (Queen Mary) and the UCL Centre for Transnational History.

The group, which will be based at UCL, was recently awarded a £10,000 grant from UCL’s CHIRP fund for fostering interdisciplinary research over the next three years.

As part of the project, the group will convene an informal reading group on the subject. The first meeting will be on 18 November 2014 at 5.45pm . All are warmly invited to join on this occasion, or for future meetings. The group would also like to act as a mediator for related events based at UCL and beyond. Join the reading group or the network

The first text for discussion will be Martha Nussbaum's Political Emotions (Harvard UP, 2013), with a particular focus on chapters 10 and 11 dealing with compassion’s enemies and public emotions. The discussion will invite critical engagement with this work.
