It was with great sadness in 2006 that the School learnt of the death of Lennart Meri, the former Estonian President, who oversaw the country's move towards the European Union following the end of Soviet domination. In 1999, Lennart Meri accepted an invitation to give a lecture at SSEES on 'Estonia 1989-1999', as seen through his eyes and experience. The lecture helped foster ties which exist to the present day between the School and Estonia.
