Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?

Studying history throughout high school, I have developed a great interest in the SSEESS region. I have studied its politics and literature and UCL SSEES gives me the opportunity to further explore my interests.

What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?

I am studying History, Politics and Economics. It is a BA programme and the breadth attracted me since I am interested in all three subjects. The programme also allows an in-depth focus on the SSEES region, making the study more exciting.

How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?

I love that alongside HPE I can also take language and culture modules. Currently, my favourite module is Russian short fiction. I am thoroughly enjoying all the chosen texts and the wonderful debates that analyse the historical context as well as its aesthetics.

How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?

The SSEES academic staff has been absolutely brilliant. All my tutors curate each session really carefully which gives time not only to learning but to a lot of debates and discussions which is always the highlight of my week.

What about the social life?

There is always something going on! SSEES organises multiple events to allow socialising plus learning through all the seminars and meetings. Tutorials are my preferred way of socialising because tutors really emphasise discussions and form small groups through which I have made a lot of new friends.

What are your future plans/aspirations?

I hope to further my studies and pursue a master's in public policy. Doing HPE would provide me with brilliant foundational skills for policy research. After that, I aim to work for a think tank or join the civil service.

Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?

The SSEES region has an exciting history and politics hence whoever is interested in studying about the Habsburgs till the collapse of the Soviet Union should definitely look into this course. Moreover, beyond the courses themselves, there is a myriad of culture and language modules so that should be an important consideration.
