IMESS How to Apply

Minimum Admission Requirements

You need to hold (or expect to obtain) an upper second class honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject area. If your Bachelors degree is in an unrelated subject, you must demonstrate their interest in IMESS through the supplementary questionnaire.

If your first language is not English, you must provide recent evidence that your spoken and written command of the English language is adequate for the programme e.g. ‘good’ level in accordance with UCL English Language Policy.

Application

All applicants applying for an IMESS programme will be automatically considered for the IMESS Scholarship on condition that applications are received before 24 March 2024.

Please complete the standard UCL graduate studies online application form and include the additional required materials, paying particular attention to the guidelines below on how to complete the IMESS Supplementary Questionnaire.

When you apply online, please ensure that you properly upload the IMESS Supplementary Questionnaire (under ‘personal statement’ on the online system), your degree transcript, proof of citizenship and English language certificate. Incomplete applications will not be looked at.

You do NOT need to complete an additional personal statement, as the IMESS Supplementary Questionnaire covers the points we are looking for.

Please note that if you fail to complete the IMESS Supplementary Questionnaire, your application will be discarded.

As UCL is the coordinating partner of the IMESS consortium, it is not necessary to apply to your preferred second year university as well. However, you must specify your study track, choice of second year university and language preferences for your application to be considered. Whilst we will try to accommodate preferences as best we can, some partners are limited on space and we cannot guarantee all applicants will get their first choice. For this reason, we ask applicants to select both a second choice and a third choice backup. Confirmation of your second year will take place during enrolment week at UCL.

It is often the case that students applying to the IMESS Programme will not graduate (or take their English language exam) until after the application deadlines have passed. In this case, please provide your latest transcript when you apply. If your application is successful, you will be provided with an offer from UCL, conditional on graduating on time with the appropriate grade and language certificate.
