An interdisciplinary programme of six two-year fellowships that was directed by Professor Michael Worton and funded by the Mellon Foundation. This programme examined the following key themes:
- Word and Image: the role played by visual and texual representations in the constructions of identity
- Popular Culture and its role in identity formation
- National, Regional and Individual Identities in a modern European context
- Nationhood and Sovereignty
- Stasis and Mobility
