Fran Marszalek is on the second year of her BA in Polish and Spanish.
Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?
I chose to study at UCL SSEES because there is truly nowhere else like it! SSEES is one of the UK’s largest institutions researching and teaching a variety of subjects relating to the SSEES region. I knew I wanted to be a part of an intellectually stimulating environment and a warm community filled with like-minded people who share my interests in the region and that is exactly what SSEES is!
What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?
I am studying for a BA in Polish and Spanish. Growing up half-Polish, yet not having been taught the language, I knew that I wanted to regain some of my heritage and learn Polish! After just one year of this degree, I already feel more connected to my Polish roots, not only through learning the language but also through meeting other Polish students and exploring more of Poland’s culture and history! Additionally, I was attracted to my degree’s flexibility and the opportunity to study a range of disciplines, including history, literature, film and culture.
How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?
I am really enjoying my course! I am now a year into learning Polish as a beginner and I was astounded by the progress I have made in just one year! Whilst it is a challenging language to learn, the process has been so rewarding! One of my favourite modules so far has been War, Trauma and Memory in East European Cinema which I took last year. Whilst the title may seem a bit gloomy, it was a thoroughly enjoyable module and we had many interesting debates about the history of Eastern Europe and the impact film has on collective memory.
How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?
The academic staff at SSEES are incredible! Their rich knowledge of and passion for the region makes lectures and seminars truly fascinating! The support at SSEES is superb, with first-year students receiving guidance from a Student Adviser and all students having termly meetings with their personal academic tutor. It’s comforting to know that there is always someone to turn to and gain helpful advice from!
What about the social life?
The social life at SSEES is amazing! There is always something to do, whether that is listening to an external speaker give a talk in the Masaryk Common Room, socialising with other students in departmental socials or making new friends in the many cultural societies we have! My favourite this year has been being involved in the Polish Society and going to different Polish bars and restaurants! Additionally, I enjoy going to the student bars to catch up with friends and exploring all that London has to offer!
What are your future plans/aspirations?
At the moment, I am considering a career in the humanitarian sector and I would love to travel with my job. My degree at SSEES, especially my year abroad next year, will effectively prepare me for this line of work and I strive to make the most of all the careers advice UCL offers!
Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?
My advice would be to go for it! I have thoroughly enjoyed my degree thus far and would encourage you to follow your passions and perhaps challenge yourself with learning something new! My experience learning Polish ab initio has been one of the most rewarding tasks I have undertaken! There is so much on offer at university so I encourage you to make the most of it! I have made so many amazing friends and have had so many fascinating conversations by being a member of the SSEES community and I would recommend it to everyone!
