Professor of Political Economy and Finance at UCL SSEES, Yuemei Ji, will giver her Inaugural Lecture on 'Trust and Central Banking in Europe'.

This lecture examines the evolution of public trust in the European Central Bank (ECB) since its establishment in 1999. It discusses the key factors influencing trust in this pivotal institution and highlights the impact of critical events such as the sovereign debt crisis of 2010–12, the global pandemic of 2020, and recent energy price shocks in shaping public trust. The lecture also addresses future challenges for central banks, focusing on the ECB’s evolving mandate, the complexities of maintaining trust amidst an expanding membership, and the growing pressures to balance monetary stability with societal expectations on issues such as fairness.
