How do Ukrainian writers reflect on war in their work? How does the experience of loss, displacement, and resistance change their writing? What role does poetry play in the processing of war trauma? A year into Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, join us for a reading and discussion with a leading Ukrainian writer Kateryna Babkina who will read some of her work in Ukrainian, followed by the English translation, and discuss her experience as a displaced writer in the UK.
SPEAKER
Kateryna Babkina is an award-winning Ukrainian poet, columnist, screenwriter, playwright, and author. She is the author of five poetry collections, three collections of short stories, and two novels, with translations into twelve languages. She has also written several books for children, which are very popular in Ukraine, and in October 2022 her children’s book Cappy and the Whale was published in translation by Penguin Random House, UK. Since February 2022 Kateryna has been involved in projects to print and distribute books in Ukrainian for children fleeing Russia’s war against Ukraine, many of whom were forced to leave their books from home behind.
