In this seminar, Dr Ashyrov will examine the connection between mega events (Olympics, FIFA World Cup, Expo etc.) being more frequently hosted by developing countries and the soaring protests by human right activists and investigative journalists about the concerns over human right violations in hosting countries. There is no evidence for a negative effect of sports mega events on human rights violations. On the contrary, the organization of events (the year of nomination as well as the actual event) produces a positive effect, which remains statistically significant after several different specifications. In addition, there is a spillover effect onto consecutive years after the election of the host country as well as after the mega-event takes place.
