Dr. Francesca Gagliardi will present on "Institutional Complementarities: Disciplines, Methods and Future Research" at this lunchtime seminar organised by the UCL SSEES Centre for Comparative Studies of Emerging Economies.

The notion of institutional complementarity has gained a prominent role in the academic discourse that looks at the link between institutions and economic change. This concept, which refers to situations of interdependence among institutions, has become of particular relevance in debates that seek to explain the institutional diversity that can be observed across and within socio-economic systems, and its consequences for economic performance. The concept of institutional complementarity has been applied across a wide range of domains and levels, including firm governance and performance, industrial relations, legal institutions, economic policy and the macroeconomy. This paper presents the results of a bibliometric study that maps the journal literature on institutional complementarities to reveal the evolution of the concept, the research themes covered and the methods used. The analysis aims to offer insights on the sociology of the scientific communities that are present in this field of research. Possible trajectories that future work on institutional complementarities is likely to explore are also identified.
