Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?

I chose to study at UCL SSEES as I grew up in a very multicultural family and wanted to carry on the trend during my studies! SSEES has a rich history, and the department is full of individuals who have a range of relevant experience. It is always fascinating to get to know the staff and the students.

What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?

I am studying the BA in East European Languages and Culture with a focus on Polish studies. I chose this because my mum is Polish, and I wanted to learn Polish to talk to my grandma in her native language! I have loved every moment of studying Polish at SSEES, and my professors are really kind, encouraging and supportive.

How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?

I absolutely love it. I study a wide range of modules, but I’d like to give a special mention to my Polish Literature 3 module, this module ignited my passion for Polish history and literature. The professor, Dr Katarzyna Zechenter, is also incredible and she teaches in a way that is engaging and inspiring.

How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?

The academic staff at SSEES are amazing. My Polish language and literature tutors, in particular, have been incredible. However, all my professors and all the staff in general have been amazing. The support is amazing, there is always someone there for you when you need support and you are always signposted to the correct place, which has made my university experience much easier for me.

What about the social life?

The social life is great! The SSEES society organise a lot of cool events and UCL as a whole is a great place to study if you’re looking for lifelong friends and amazing events! Studying in London has helped bring me out of my shell, and I’ve met some of my best friends at SSEES.

What are your future plans/aspirations?

I am actually an offer holder for the MA in Audio Storytelling for Radio and Podcast at UCL! My bachelor’s course is incredibly interdisciplinary. Therefore, it has taught me that I can follow any path and be successful at it. To be honest, my love for my undergraduate pushed me to apply for my MA, because I want to create podcasts about Polish culture, among other things.

Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?

My advice is to just go for it. You will not regret it at all, and you will look back on any doubts you had about choosing this degree at the end of your 3/4 years, and you will realise that it was actually the best decision of your life! Don’t be afraid, you’ve got this!
