Why did you choose to study at UCL SSEES?
While doing my A-levels I had noticed how subjects such as History were always taught from a British perspective, which limited discussion and debate about how other nations especially from Eastern Europe reacted to pivotal global events. This sparked my interest in the teaching at SSEES and its unique feature of being a geographical department rather than a subject department. As someone who has future diplomatic and leadership aspirations, I believe the teaching methodology at SSEES is vital to creating open minded students who can challenge ideas and critically think about the perspectives they are taught from. Additionally, due to the current political and diplomatic climate of the world, having specialised in Eastern European studies will facilitate my future career opportunities as well as my desire to help contribute to easing tensions between states.
What are you studying and what attracted you to this particular course?
I am currently studying History, Politics and Economics. This course initially interested me due its multidisciplinary aspect. As someone who enjoyed these subjects at A-level, I struggled to pinpoint one specific path to study at university level, so I was delighted when I saw SSEES offered this degree. I enjoy how I am able to study these subjects individually, but also encouraged to find connections between them, and how they affect one another.
How is your course going? Any favourite modules so far?
I am really enjoying my course so far, as it’s a combination of familiar content as well as new ideas. Currently, I like the Understanding Politics module, due to the weekly discussions and debates in my tutorial group. Also, I like the Microeconomics module, and although the maths can be challenging at times, I enjoy the process of learning new skills.
How would you describe the academic staff at SSEES? What is the support like?
The academic staff at SSEES are really helpful. My personal tutor made me feel welcome and explained all the unique features about SSEES and UCL in our first meeting, which allowed me to feel more confident when navigating through my first few weeks. Additionally, the lecturers are really understanding and are always willing to help and listen to feedback, and most importantly act on it.
What about the social life?
The social life is really engaging at UCL. Due to the numerous societies, including the SSEES society, there are various events going on every day. At times, I struggle to decide which ones to attend! I really enjoy the fact that the events include both academic aspects, such as talks and debates, but also more social aspects such as games nights.
Any advice for those thinking about taking this course?
My main advice would be not to stress too much if the course involves new subjects that you haven’t studied before, or if you are unfamiliar with East European studies. This teaching at UCL means you have all the resources to help you feel confident in your academic journey, regardless of what you have studied previously.
