Student Support and Wellbeing Services: teams and responsibilities

Information about Student Support and Wellbeing Services, including our broad responsibilities and contact details for each of our teams. This information is intended for use by UCL staff.

Student Support and Wellbeing Services provides information, advice and welfare support for all registered students in relation to disability, mental health, counselling, global opportunities and international student welfare, in addition to managing events and general student enquiries.

Student Events and Campaigns

Led by: Eloise McDay. Responsibilities include:

  • Contributes to the overall Student Support and Wellbeing Services (SSWS) service by promoting services, events and campaigns.
  • Ensures all UCL students benefit from a rich and diverse range of extracurricular and wellbeing services and experiences which build their sense of community and support positive mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
  • Manages SSWS’s webpages, staff tools, online information, resources, and social media.
  • Deliver all SSWS-related communications and marketing, leading and promoting our Visual Identity to ensure clear consistency of one SSWS.
  • Manages partnerships with external organisations.
  • Delivers continuous improvement projects.
  • Leads enhanced coordination of student inductions across UCL.
  • Leads support in halls of residence through Wardens and Student Residence Advisers.

    Disability, Neurodiversity, Mental Health and Wellbeing Support Services 

    Led by Chilima Sianyueka and Louise Grimmett. Responsibilities include:

    • Provide a comprehensive range of support services for students who have a disability which impacts upon their studies at UCL
    • Support students with physical and sensory impairments, specific learning difficulties, autistic spectrum disorders, mental health difficulties, and long-term health conditions
    • Arrange for Reasonable Academic Adjustments to learning environments, loan out specialist equipment and provide one-to-one tutoring and support for students with specific learning difficulties
    • Provide one-to-one support to students to help mitigate the impact of mental health conditions
    • Support and provide appropriate external referrals to students affected by domestic and/or sexual violence
    • Inform and advise students considering interruption of study for health and/or wellbeing reasons
    • Support students who return to study following an interruption due to health and/or wellbeing reasons

      Study Abroad and International Student Support Services 

      Led by Catriona Hanks. Responsibilities include:

      • Manages outgoing international student mobility for undergraduates, including through the Turing Scheme.
      • Manages short-term international student mobility opportunities.
      • Supports UCL students while studying abroad.
      • Supports incoming international students to adjust to life in the UK.
      • Supports Affiliate students and the Affiliate student experience.​​​​​​

      Student Support and Enquiries, and Specialist Advice and Casework Support Services 

      Led by Finola Gibson. Responsibilities include:

      • Manage the face-to-face point of contact for student-related enquiries from new and current UCL students, academics, faculties and departments, and the wider UCL community
      • Offer email support to new and current students, and provide confirmation of a student’s enrolment at UCL
      • Deliver the new student enquiries management project and related systems
      • Deliver specialist advice and casework support to students 
      • Manage the Report and Support (student route) submissions and triaging
      • Manage the Specialist Advice and Casework Services team, who provide advice and support to students who are either currently homeless or at imminent risk of becoming homeless, to students affected by harassment, sexual misconduct, and gender-based violence, and those who have experienced refugeedom or forced migration.

      • support UCL students with personal, emotional and psychological concerns through short-term counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, psychiatric support and psycho-educational groups
