Making the assessment period easier with the Moodle-SITS integrations
21 April 2026
Read this if you want to reduce assessment administration stress, stop endless double-checking and have more time for student support!
If you are involved with Moodle assessment administration and haven’t yet engaged with SITS Marks Transfer or Automated Extensions, the assessment period would be a good time to do so!
Recent quotes from some of our Faculty Champions:
“We are able to prioritise other things now as marks transfer is a much smaller task” – Alex Seow, Education Coordinator for Biochemistry
“It has removed the nightmare of going round in circles to see who did what!” - Alan Seatwo, Programme Development and Digital Education Manager for STEapp
“Importing extensions is a massive improvement in terms of staff time, accuracy and student experience, as they can now see the correct deadlines on Moodle straight away”- Richard Maskell, Education Administrator for Economics
“So far it feels like a very positive improvement. The volume of checks has decreased significantly. Marking staff can prioritise marking submissions based on deadline, which helps with their marking load on big modules that have large numbers of extensions.” – Andrea Pawley, Teaching and Learning Coordinator, Faculty of S & HS
“SITS Marks Transfer and Automated Extensions save so much time and have been a huge improvement. I was spending so much time on this and it has decreased student queries too as they always expected it to be done automatically!” Course Administrator, Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Moodle-SITS Marks Transfer
When can you use it?
If you are a Moodle Category Administrator, Course Administrator, Course Leader, Tutor or FLTL, a Portico enrolment block has been used to create a mapping with a Module Delivery and a single Moodle activity or Grade Category needs to be linked to a single component or multiple Portico components. The Moodle assessment marks should be numerical 0-100, not include the % symbol and be set to Default (Real) in the Grade Book. The assessment component in Portico should be compatible with SITS marking schemes and SITS assessment types.
What Moodle activities am I able to use?
The following summative assessment activities:
- Moodle Assignment
- Moodle Quiz (please ensure the quiz mark is out of 100 in the Grade Book)
- Turnitin Assignment (NOT multipart)
- Grade item (for an item you have added manually to the Grade Book. Please ensure the Grade type is set to "value" and the maximum value is 100).
- Grade category (This means that if you have set up a Category in the Grade Book which has its own aggregated grade calculated from its Grade Items, you can also transfer this to one or more than one component in Portico).
- You can now also transfer marks for Moodle Workshop, Lesson and the new Coursework plugin.
Go to the sits marks transfer page to set up the mapping to the SITS component. You can transfer marks once they are available. For full guidance on how to use marks transfer, you can view our general overview, how to guide and FAQs.
Moodle Automated Extensions
Approved extension data can be pulled into Moodle from SITS to automatically create user or group overrides to adjust individual deadlines. Importing extensions works with Moodle Assignment, Quiz, Lesson or Coursework. Turnitin assignments not supported.
Extension types include Reasonable Academic Adjustments (RAAs), Extenuating Circumstances (ECs) and Delayed Assessment Permits (DAPs). You should check the assessment type is eligible for extensions in Portico. Oral presentations and group assignments are not currently supported. You can generate a report to show students on a module with approved RAAs, DAPs and EC mitigations.
When you create the marks transfer mapping, you can choose to import extensions. For full guidance on how to import extensions into Moodle, see the automated extensions guide .
