An update on consumer protection law at UCL

8 October 2025

Improved guidance on consumer protection law for UCL staff

Over the summer, we have been working to improve our guidance for staff on providing information to both prospective students and current students. This is designed to ensure that UCL is compliant with consumer protection legislation. We wanted to share some key updates with you on where you can find the updated guidance and seek support.

We need to support prospective students in making their decision by providing accurate and clear information about what and where they will study, how and where they will be taught and what is expected of them. This is not only best practice but required by consumer protection law.

NEW Consumer Protection Law Procedure

The Consumer Protection Law Procedure sets out the guiding principles of how the law applies in the UCL context. This includes guidance and examples for staff if changes must be made to a programme after the offer stage.

More resources are available on the consumer protection pages for staff.

Training

To find out more about the type of information that should be provided, please complete the Students' Consumer Rights training module. You can also search for the course in Learn Upon. This training is encouraged for anyone involved with communicating with prospective students.

Hosting an event with prospective students?

Our factsheet provides a quick guide to consumer protection for all staff participating in these events.

If you have a question about information provision or potential changes to your courses/information, please send an email to srs-compliance@ucl.ac.uk .
