Assessment Updates

1 July 2021

Minor amendments and improvements to the assessment regulations for taught programmes

Maximum assessment period

If a student undertakes a deferral, resit or repeat, they have two years in which to complete that assessment. The regulations have been enhanced to include a precise definition of this ‘two years’:

The assessment must be completed within the next two academic sessions (e.g. if the student first enrols on the module in 2020-21 they must complete the assessment by the end of 2022-23).

This is the interpretation currently used by Academic Services when considering Suspensions of Regulations, and it is hoped that this can reduce the need for SoRs in this area.

New regulations:

Chapter 4: Assessment Framework for Taught Programmes

  • 6.10.2 Deferred Assessment/ Scope & Definitions, paragraphs 9 & 10
  • 11.2 Failure at the First Attempt paragraphs 10 & 11

Quorum for Exam Boards

The quorum for Full Exam Boards has been simplified, as it was unclear what ‘a fifth of the membership’ meant in practice. The quorum is now five members, which must include the Chair or Deputy Chair, and at least one Internal Examiner and one External Examiner for each main subject area covered.

The quorum for Sub Boards has also been confirmed as two members, which must include the Chair or Deputy Chair and at least one Internal Examiner for each main subject area covered

New regulations:

Chapter 4: Assessment Framework for Taught Programmes

  • 13.3.3: Quoracy, paragraphs 1 & 2
  • 13.3.9: Delegation of Authority to a Sub Board, former paragraph 5

Types of Exam Board

A taxonomy of exam boards and preparatory meetings was put together by a working group of Exam Board Chairs during 2019-20. A few corrections and clarifications have been made, particularly around the status of Interim Boards and Preparatory Meetings.

This document has now moved from Annex 4.3.7 of the Academic Manual to the staff-facing SRS Exam Board Support website so that it can be updated according to operational need each summer.

Chapter 4: Assessment Framework for Taught Programmes

  • 13.2: Types of Board, paragraphs 1.b), 1.b)i., 1.c) & 4

Supplementary modules

Under the former regulations, a small number of programmes included additional/ synoptic modules in the classification. This is no longer a feature of the new UG classification regulations, and all of the programmes have now removed the additional modules. Chapter 2 has been updated so that it aligns with the classification regulations in Chapter 4.

New regulations:

Chapter 2: Qualifications and Credit Framework

  • 3.10 Modules, paragraph 7, bullet 4
