6 ways to make your office more green

18 October 2019

Here are 6 small ways you can improve your office’s green credentials:

1.    Go paperless (as much as possible)

Try to fight the temptation to print meeting notes and other materials off regularly. Instead try to store and distribute documents digitally through good old email or applications like Microsoft Teams and One Drive. Not only are you saving trees by using less paper but you save water - it takes 1.5 cups of water to make just 1 sheet of paper. It also reduces pollution - making 1 tonne of paper emits 1.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalent. If you do have to use paper, try to ensure that you only buy in 100% recycled paper.

2.    Unplug

It can be easy to forget but saving energy doesn’t just stop at simply powering down your devices. Standby power can become a huge unnecessary expense. Don’t let standby power just waste away – remember to unplug your workstation before leaving the office.

3.    Use micro-fiber cloths instead of paper towels

In most offices, paper towels are the go-to method for cleaning up of any kind. However, people often overlook many inexpensive, eco-friendly alternatives. Get yourself a stack of microfiber cleaning cloths and attack that bolognaise spillage with enthusiasm.

4. Use natural fiber sponges

Small and mundane they may be, sponges pose environmental risks. Most sponges are made from oil-based plastics that can take up to 52,000 years to decompose in landfill sites. Try to purchase sponges made from plant-based fibres. Not only will they clean just as well but you can clean guilt free as they will break down easily when you do eventually throw them away.

5. Use compostable plates

While ceramic plates are the best option in terms of reusability, budget for plates may not always be there. If this is the case, try to purchase compostable or recyclable plate options. Whether you’re celebrating birthdays or promotions, keep the environment in mind when buying single use products.

6. Decorate the office with plants

Although all SRS office spaces have been kitted out with fabulous new plants, bringing more plants in from your home to decorate your office is never a bad thing. The more plants in your office the purer the air you breathe. They help to remove toxins from the air and are aesthetically pleasing at the same time. What more could you want!
