Extenuating Circumstances and Easter Closure
25 February 2019
This year’s late Easter could delay processing of EC claims – make sure you plan ahead
As Easter is very late this year, exams will be starting as soon as we all get back from the College Closure. As a result, Faculty and Departmental Extenuating Circumstances Panels are being asked to give additional consideration to how and when they will process students’ EC claims, particularly if your students have an exam timetabled between 23 and 26 April.
UCL does not operate a ‘Fit to Sit’ Policy. Students are strongly advised not to sit an examination if they feel unwell but, if they decide to do so, UCL will still consider EC requests if the student feels that their performance has been seriously impaired.
It is not possible to guarantee that a decision will be made before the student’s exam takes place, but you might like to consider some or all of the following actions to help:
- Making sure that student’s are aware that they can still submit an EC claim even if they choose to sit the exam.
- Encouraging students to put in their EC forms as early as possible to increase the chances of them receiving a response before they sit their exam.
- Asking students to include the date of their exam on their EC form to help you prioritise their cases.
- Scheduling an EC Panel for 23 April to consider urgent cases.
- Ensuring the Chair or Deputy Chair is available to take Chair’s Action during that week.
