The SRS Compliance team cover Office for Students (OfS), Prevent, Consumer Protection Law (often referred to as CMA – Consumer Marketing Authority), and DBS requirements.
What we do
The areas of compliance we cover are the Office for Students (OfS), Prevent, Consumer Protection Law (often referred to as CMA – Consumer Marketing Authority), and DBS requirements. We also act as a point of contact for SRS on any GDPR related concerns for the central Data Protection Team including FOI requests which require information from SRS.
Office for Students (OfS)
At UCL, the Provost serves as the accountable officer responsible for reporting to the Office for Students (OfS). However, the day-to-day management of OfS matters is handled by our team who act as the main point of contact. Our responsibilities include preparing updates for Council meetings, overseeing compliance monitoring, coordinating engagement with consultations and reportable events, submitting reportable events, providing guidance and distributing key OfS communications, liaising with the Provost’s Office, and supporting the implementation of any new regulations.
Prevent
Working alongside UCL Prevent Lead, the team is responsible for managing the university’s obligations under the Prevent duty. This includes compiling the annual monitoring return for the OfS, advising staff on Prevent-related queries, and maintaining both the mandatory training module and more in-depth annual training for key staff. The team also inputs to and shares Prevent-related policies, the risk assessment and action plan, coordinates regular meetings of the UCL Prevent network, and provides an annual update to Academic Board.
Consumer Protection Law/Consumer Marketing Authority (OfS Condition C1)
The team is responsible for monitoring compliance with the regulatory framework and providing advisory support to staff on consumer protection laws and their implications. We manage and update an online training module for staff involved in student communications, as well as provide briefings as required. The team also handles reports of breaches, leads the CMA Compliance Steering Group, and ensures appropriate action is taken when issues arise.
Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
The team is responsible for managing the DBS processes for students, implementing new DBS processes, assessing eligibility for different levels of check, and providing an advisory service on student DBS related queries for staff. The team are also the point of contact for the umbrella body service Atlantic data who we use to process DBS checks for students.
