About the qualification
AEAs are separate examinations which aim to let the brightest students demonstrate greater depth of understanding than is required at GCE A Level whilst using the same curriculum content, and without the need for extra teaching.
One of the reasons for establishing the AEAs was to enable universities to differentiate between able students. Few, if any, universities include them in their entrance requirements. AEAs might have a role to play at Confirmation in August when seeking to distinguish between students who have just fallen short of offer requirements. They should not, however, be included in any offers of admission.
AEAs are graded Fail, Merit or Distinction.
