SpaceTimeLab welcomes visitors from Didi and the Shanghai Government

​Following Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the UK last October, cooperation between research institutes in the UK and industry or government in China has increased. In the past weeks SpaceTimeLab has welcomed two visiting groups from China, organised by UK Trade & Investment, and the British Embassy Beijing.

On Wednesday 16th March, SpaceTimeLab hosted two delegates from the Shanghai government: Ms Wei Qiu, Deputy Director of Big Data Development Division under Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatisation (CEI) and Mr Baijun Zhang, VP of China Industrial Design Institute (CIDI).

In the meeting, we introduced our research projects in transport, intelligent policing, business intelligence and environmental resilience, which our guests were very interested in. The delegates introduced their Shanghai Open Data Apps (SODA) programme, which launched an open data challenge competition this year.

On Tuesday 22nd March, a visiting group from Didi (the leading company of taxi-calling services in China) visited SpaceTimeLab. The group consisted of 5 people: Mr Bo Zhang, CTO and Co-founder of Didi Technology, Ms Hong Zhang, Director of Resource Platform of Didi College, Mr Xuan Zhang, General Manager of Mapping Division of Didi, Mr Baoli Li, Director of Mapping Division of Didi and Tencent, and Mr Guotao Qiu, Director of Mapping Division of Didi and Tencent. Dr Jieping Ye (Associate president of Institute of Machine Learning, Didi Technology) joined the meeting via Skype.

The groups had a discussion about potential cooperation on the topics of arrival time prediction, route planning, and demand/supply modelling.
