Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences

Dean's Welcome

Welcome to the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences at UCL.

Sasha Rosenil, Dean of Social & Historical Sciences, UCL
"We are a large and vibrant community of academics and students working in nine departments and institutes: the Departments of Anthropology, Economics, Geography, History, History of Art and Political Science, and the Institutes of the Americas, Archaeology and Advanced Studies. Our interests span the globe, as we seek to understand the social, political, economic, cultural and environmental processes that have shaped the world over time. Our work ranges across the social sciences, humanities and sciences, and cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Our academics are opening up new areas of study and deepening knowledge about issues that have long been on research agendas. Our research is widely regarded as world leading, with the 2019 Times Higher World University Rankings placing our social sciences 14th in the world and our arts and humanities disciplines 6th.

Chart new pathways

"All of this makes Social and Historical Sciences at UCL an exciting place to study. We will encourage you to think for yourself and to ask difficult questions, and we will push you to work hard and to engage rigorously with the arguments, data, texts and material objects that you encounter in your studies. You will join an open, inclusive learning community composed of people from all over the world and from many different backgrounds. UCL was the first university in England that was open to women and to students from all religious and ethnic backgrounds, and the Faculty of Social & Historical Sciences is deeply committed to the promotion of equality and diversity in all that we do.
