100 in 10

The 100 in 10 initiative is a strategic vision for the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences to recruit and graduate 100 PhD students from Black British, British Bangladeshi and British Pakistani backgrounds over 10 years. These three BME categories are statistically the most under-represented in UK higher education, including at UCL and within SHS.

The 100 in 10 scheme moves beyond traditional supervisory models in the humanities and social sciences. The package will involve lead supervisors operating as part of a panel. PhD students on this scheme will develop a project that adds to an existing, larger research agenda related to supervisors’ own research expertise. The emphasis is on developing a strong, connected programme of academic support, mentor, sponsorship and career preparation.

Our Vision

The SHS 100 in 10 scheme will not only fund students through Master’s and PhD study, but will also look to create new approaches to how research students are supervised and mentored to realise their potential.

Funding

We are looking to create a whole cohort of new academics in SHS who will have the funding, training, support networks and career progression opportunities necessary to change UK academia permanently.

Research

Alongside our continued research and critical engagement with the difficult legacies of Britain’s colonial past, SHS wants to create new and restorative legacies that can help to transform not just the academy but also society.

The BME ‘Awarding Gap’

We aim to create a genuinely diverse academic community and increase the numbers of students who progress into academic careers by building a pipeline of talent from undergraduate all the way through to senior academic positions.
