David Fairman named UCL Technician of the Year

David has supported the Department’s ocean and climate research for the past eight years, specialising in the analysis of marine sediment cores. His work includes sediment grain size analysis and the identification of foraminifera – microscopic marine fossils – used to reconstruct past ocean conditions, deep-sea currents and climate change. 

The award recognises David’s technical expertise and the vital role he plays in supporting research across the Department. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he expanded his skills by teaching himself to identify hundreds of benthic foraminifera species and learning advanced statistical techniques to analyse the resulting data.

Alongside his research support, David has trained more than 40 undergraduate, MSc and PhD students in laboratory methods, analytical techniques and risk assessment. He also helps maintain laboratory equipment, manages resources and ensures research projects run smoothly. 

Colleagues praised David’s precision, attention to detail and willingness to support others in their nominations for the award, highlighting the important contribution he makes to the success of the Department’s research. They also recognised his patient approach to mentoring students and the positive impact he has on the wider research community.
