Supported by the Art and Culture Development Foundation (ACDF) of Uzbekistan, Dr Vivek Gupta was part of the autumn 2025 cohort of residents at the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) Residencies in Tashkent.
The CCA Residency has allowed Vivek to explore contemporary narratives of Timurid art and architecture and its transregional legacies linking Central and South Asia.
“The residency has enabled me to visit a range of canonical architectural sites and understudied collections in Tashkent, Bukhara, Samarkand, and Khiva. Although I have taught and known much of the region’s visual arts through publications, experiencing it first-hand has deepened my sensitivity to issues of restoration and living heritage. Having written about scholarly networks forged by madrasas, the residency’s thoughtfully conceived premises were a source of much inspiration. It has also been invaluable to be part of a strongly interdisciplinary group of residents under the direction of Chief Curator and Artistic Director, Dr Sara Raza.”
Research from Vivek’s residency will continue to inform his long-term project on transhistorical entanglements between Central and South Asia.
