Seven UCL Geography Student Ambassadors Graduate with First-Class Honours

"I would say that the Student Ambassador role was a great opportunity to work flexibly and build experience and a lot of skills to take forward into future job applications. 

I was given the opportunity to lead a small team and practice communicating with a wide range of audiences, which I found really valuable to use as examples in interviews. 

It was also just really nice to be able to chat to potential future geographers joining the Department!"

"Over my three years as a student ambassador, what I enjoyed most was talking to prospective students and seeing their excitement grow as they discovered what UCL Geography had to offer. 

From chatting about first-year field trips and life in London to sharing insights from my dissertation in my final year, it was rewarding to help shape their first impressions, helping them imagine their own journey, while reflecting on how the department has shaped me into the person I want to be. 

The role was never too time-consuming, usually just once every couple of weeks, and came in lots of different forms, from online sessions to in-person open days. Having been involved at every level, from department events to faculty-wide and even university open days, it was a great way to meet other current and prospective students, hear their experiences, and be reminded why I chose UCL.

Leading Q&As and guiding visitors during open days gave me the confidence to communicate ideas in an approachable way and work effectively with a wide range of people. If you are considering applying, don’t hesitate. The role truly grows with you, and your experiences, no matter how mundane or significant, are incredibly valuable to prospective students.

"Being a Geography Ambassador was a really rewarding experience because it allowed me to engage with prospective students by welcoming people to the Open Days, holding panels, and having one-to-one chats for individual questions. 

I enjoyed thinking carefully about how to explain our course and classes in a way that is clear and engaging for people who aren't studying UCL Geography. I also gained practical skills through helping set up the event and making sure everything ran smoothly, which strengthened my teamwork, organisation, and communication. 

Overall, the role gave me confidence in speaking to different audiences and sharing what studying Geography involves. I would highly recommend this experience, as it is a great opportunity to be involved in the Geography Department from another angle and help guide prospective students."
