Archaeology, History and Heritage in the context of Climate Change and Green Transitions

The workshop, taking place at UCL, is part of a broader programme of Shanghai City Dialogues focussing on global waterfront cities. Season Two of ‘Our Water: Flowing from Shanghai - Intercultural Dialogues among World Cities’ explores the connections between Shanghai and London. Season One was held in Paris.

The Our Water programme aims to foster cross-cultural collaboration among world cities through the metaphorical lens of rivers. Centred on the theme ‘Zero-Carbon Waterside’, Our Water Season Two will explore Sino-British Dialogues on sustainable development, finance, and creative industries.

The workshop, jointly organised by Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations, Fudan University and University College London, will aim to explore opportunities for research collaborations between UCL and Fudan University, one of UCL’s key global partner institutions, on themes relating to the main Our Water Season Two programme. It will be co-chaired by Sue Hamilton, Professor of Prehistory and Vice Dean Research and Global Engagement (Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences), and Rodney Harrison, Professor of Heritage Studies, UCL Institute of Archaeology.

Rodney will present his work on ‘Rethinking Heritage and Museums for Green Transitions’, while Yijie Zhuang, Professor of Chinese Archaeology and Geoarchaeology, UCL Institute of Archaeology will present on ‘Water Towns and HuoGeng ShuiNou (Inundating and Burning) Mode of Farming.’

UCL colleagues from History and History of Art and the Bartlett along with Fudan colleagues from the Institute of Chinese Historical Geography, the Department of Cultural Heritage and Museology, the Department of Tourism, and colleagues from the Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations, will also be joining the workshop, which will provide a significant opportunity to explore the mutual interests and complementary strengths of Fudan University and UCL in Social Science based research.
